Breast Cancer in Ethiopia and Beyond
A national assessment has revealed that breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in Ethiopia, accounting for 16,133 (20.9%) of all cancer cases and 9,061 (17.5%) of all cancer-related deaths. In sub-Saharan Africa, approximately 80% of breast cancer cases are detected at late stages (III or IV), compared to only 15% in high-income countries. Globally, the statistics are equally concerning. According to a 2020 World Health Organization (WHO) report, 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer, leading to 685,000 deaths. The burden of the disease extends beyond mortality rates, contributing significantly to disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and emphasizing the urgent need for early detection and timely intervention.

Why Early Detection Matters
Early detection of breast cancer significantly increases survival rates and improves quality of life. In Ethiopia and similar low-resource settings, cultural stigma, lack of awareness, and limited access to healthcare facilities are among the barriers to early screening. Frequently Ask & Questions

Timermer is an initiative led by young health professionals in Ethiopia, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of early breast cancer screening, especially among women. Its mission is to promote early detection and timely intervention through accessible and innovative solutions, reducing breast cancer-related deaths and fostering healthier communities.

A national assessment shows that breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in Ethiopia, accounting for 16,133 cases (20.9% of all cancer cases) and 9,061 deaths (17.5% of all cancer-related deaths). In sub-Saharan Africa, approximately 80% of breast cancer cases are detected at advanced stages (III or IV), unlike in high-income countries where early detection rates are much higher.

Timermer seeks to improve breast cancer detection by providing accessible, innovative solutions that utilize technology and medical advancements. By creating awareness and empowering individuals, Timermer aims to increase early detection rates, ultimately reducing the number of deaths caused by late-stage diagnoses.

Early detection is crucial as it leads to timely interventions that are more effective in treating breast cancer. In Ethiopia, where advanced-stage detection is prevalent, early detection can significantly reduce mortality rates and improve survival outcomes.

You can get involved with Timermer by supporting their initiatives through awareness campaigns, contributing to their outreach efforts, or donating to help fund accessible screening programs. Visit the “Get Tested” section on their website to learn more about ways to support their mission.
